US Visa Real – life Experience For Visitor Visa (B1/B2)

People have shared their real life experience about Interview for a USA Visitor Visa (B1/B2), giving us a clear look at what happens during the process. They talk about the questions they were asked and how they answered them.

These true experiences help explain what it’s like to get a B1/B2 visa to visit the United States. They cover things like the paperwork you need—such as passports, invitation letters, and proof of money—and the important visa interview. These stories show both the tough parts and the wins that applicants go through.

They also mention how long it takes to get a decision after the interview, how past trips can affect your application, why some people get denied, and why it’s important to prove you’ll return to your home country.

B1B2 Visa interview experience on March 28th

CA location– Delhi embassy
Asked for no documents, just the passport.
Still, I had with me-
Invitation Letter, Letter of enrolment from college, Dean’s letter permitting me for electives, College transcripts, Bank Statements last 6 months, Balance certificates showing some funds, Documents supporting my previous travel history, Appointment confirmation, DS confirmation.

Questions asked
Officer- Hey how are you?
Me- Good Morning Officer! (Didn’t answer her question)

1.) Officer- What do you ‘work’ here?
Me—Officer, I am a final-year medical student currently in the internship period of my MBBS degree, which is (I uttered master and then readily corrected myself) a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery that I have to complete before I graduate.

2.) Officer- Who will sponsor your trip to the US?
ME- My father will be sponsoring my trip to the United States.

3.) Officer- What does he do?
Me- He is a retired Government officer in the Department of ____.

4.) Officer- Tell me something about your previous travel history! (I had traveled to Europe a year back)
Me—Officer, I went to Europe for the same purpose as I stated in the US, which is a medical rotation in a hospital to gain some foreign experience in the field of medicine. For the first four weeks, I was in (country) for my rotation, and for the latter one week, I traveled around.

5.) Officer- Okayyy! (She seemed quite convinced here) So your father sponsored your trip to Europe as well?
Me- Yes officer.

6.) Officer- Where are you going to the US?
Me- I am going to Lasante Medical Health Centre for my rotation which is in Brooklyn, NY.

7.) Officer- Which hospital is it affiliated to?
Me- Sunny Downstate Hospital which is also in Brooklyn, NY.

8.) Officer- What will you do there?
Me- I will be observing patients under the supervision of a senior doctor; learning new ways of medical healthcare (I didn’t know what I was speaking about here) starting from the history taking of a patient to their treatment and discharge. The whole process that it involves.
*I personally believe this answer could have been better but nevertheless it’s fine until you answer some blunder.

9.) Officer- Will you treat patients there?
Me- No, I will not be treating pts.

10.) Last damn question!
Officer- Will you be able to make it to US on time? (So this question is asked because I showed that I intended to travel on 2nd April and my rotation starts on 3rd and here I was interviewing on March 28th)
Me- DM to know this answer. I somehow managed to give a convincing reply.
The officer seemed convinced and smiled too, though a little.😂

I know a lot of answers could have been better, but one is already nervous that we should aim at avoiding blunders; otherwise, everything is fine. BE CONFIDENT, that’s the key!
Dm if you need any more details. Happy to help. this Website really helped me a lot.

My experience of Biometric and CA, hope this is helpful:

Biometrics on 29th March @Delhi
– At Shivaji Stadium metro Station
– Took less 15 minutes from going inside to coming out
– don’t go too early as they allow as per slots, 15-30 mins in advance
– Only DS160, appointment letter, and Passport needed
– Phones, wallets allowed
– Pretty smooth

CA on April 3 @Delhi
– At the US embassy
– Took 2 hrs 15 mins in total from going into coming out
Here you can go early as they were allowing
– Provision to submit phone and small bags for a minimal amount (Rs50)
– pretty smooth as well

Interview experience: 15 secs
Questions asked:

– Where do you work
– how long have you been working with this org
– How many people are you expecting at the conference

And the golden words :))
(She was funny and was cracking jokes 😉 )

Let me know if any of you have any questions I can help with

My visa got approved!

Date: 4th April
VAC location – Chennai

CA interview time was 9am.. Went inside by 8:00AM.. Came out by 8:45 AM

So 4 places you need to stop before the interview,

1. Entry gate for your passport scan of sticker pasted in the back during your biometric

2. For the locker, only electronic items are allowed to keep.. I didn’t carry anything so skipped this

3. Again biometrics to reconfirm your previous scan details

4 interview with the officers

Question asked ( although they decide the result by checking your DS 160 details) still they ask just to cross-check.. In my case, she checked my application smiled and asked few questions

Q- the purpose of your visit
Q- What did you do in Germany ( previous stamp)
Q- Are you going to come back to India or not?

No documents were asked/checked

My parents and Brother’s visa got approved! Thanks to this Website. Be careful with agents and a lot of fraud going on in the Telegram groups. You can book the slots if you can.

CA- Mumbai

CA interview time was 9am. Went inside by 8.30am. out by 10:45 am.

My parents and brother had 2 separate applications initially.

My brother had Fingerprints in Kolkata. CA in Mumbai

My parents had both in Mumbai.

Because of the server issues in March, they asked for a common date and time and they got the CA slot for today at 9am.

During the initial check, my parents told the officer that they are with my brother and asked if they can get a common interview despite having 2 separate applications but at the same time -They agreed.
(There was apparently another family with a similar situation and they allowed them to have a common family interview as well )

They opted for Telugu translation.

Interview :
They asked questions to Everyone individually:

Questions to Father

Q- Purpose of your visit /why do you want to go to US?
Q- where are you going ?
Q- what do you work as? -Retired

Why did you leave the job?
When did you leave the job?
He told him that he had a job offer that he was planning to accept when he came back from the US and was about to show the offer letter but he said not necessary.
Then apparently they started asking about the new job.
Location, hospital name, salary

Finally
Visa approved for all

No documents were asked/checked

Chennai CA Experience:

Attend the interview for B2 for my son and myself today and the visa was approved for both.

Had a 1:30 appointment. Reached at 1 and we were let in immediately. The consulate is much better organized than the VAC. There was not much waiting and no delay anywhere. The interview itself was for 5 mins, and we were out by 1:40.

Do not carry a mobile, smartwatch, car keys, handbag, or water bottle. Just carry the documents folder, wallet, and an analog if you must. There are no lockers available at the consulate. Be well dressed but no need for formal. Smart casuals are good enough for both men and women.

Questions Asked:
1. Are you going to the US for tourism?
A. Planning to accompany my husband on his business trip to Chicago and also visit my brother in California.
2. So are you going to fly to Chicago and then to California?
A. Yes
3. Have you ever lived in the US?
A. No
4. Have you been to any other countries?
A. Told him the list of countries I had been to
5. Question to my son – young man what do you do?
A. Studying. I’m in grade 11

Scan your fingers on the scanner.
Both your visas are approved. Have a good day.

No documents were asked.

Ps: If there are minor changes in ds-160 that are not material like changes in travel dates etc. you don’t have to bother to correct them at the last moment and submit a new form because it doesn’t matter as long as there is no mismatch in any material information.

I just finished my visa interview in Mumbai. Here’s a recap for anyone who might need it:

1. I arrived at 7.30 for my 8 am appointment.
2. There was already a queue and I reached the entrance in about ten minutes. I suggest one should get there by 7.15 as by 7.40 they were letting people for 8.10 as well and there’s no token system.
3. Had to deposit my mobile and it took a while since there was one counter and the attendant was quite slow. The suggestion here is to leave any electronics, smartwatches, etc. at home or your hotel so you don’t get delayed.
4. Once inside there’s a queue for them to check your vac sticker and confirm the language for your interview. There were three counters for this.
5. Second queue then for fingerprint verification. 4 counters for this.
6. Third queue basis language chosen for the interview – The English queue is long but 10 counters available and for other languages, there are 3 counters available.
7. Took me about an hour to finish all three steps.
The visa officer asked the following questions:
What is the purpose of your visit
Holidays
Will you be traveling alone
with my wife
Have you visited any other countries in the past
mentioned the places I’ve visited
What do you do for a living
mentioned the name of the employer and my role
Do you have any kids
No
VO made some small talk about being deputed in Budapest before lockdown and asked why I had visited last year.
Mentioned it was a holiday.
Your visa is approved. You should receive your passport in about a week.

Hi All,

Location – Mumbai
Visa Category – B1/B2

My Visa was rejected in Feb’23.
Reason – I feel that I couldn’t express myself confidently to the VO and a few details were missed in DS-160. Also, the VO was a little tuff.

Reapplied again in Mumbai, and filled out a new DS properly and detailed. The interview lasted for 10min. And finally got approved.

Why want to visit the US?
What do you do?
Why have I traveled to so many countries?
How many days do you stay in a country?
Why so many days in each country?
Are you married ?
Any child
What does my relative do in US?
How did you get an appointment so fast? I see people are waiting for a year?
Do you do farming?  — this question was asked coz in the first interview they had asked me about properties in India. So I had mentioned that I own farmland.

No documents asked only passport.

And finally she said, I’m granting you visa.😃

B1/B2 visa experience—

My mother had been preparing for her visa interview for 3-4 days, and the day finally arrived. Her biometric appointment was scheduled for March 15th, and the interview was set for the following day at the US Embassy in New Delhi. She made sure to arrive at the venue 45 minutes prior to her scheduled time, just to be safe.

As a non-English speaker, my mother requested a Hindi translator, and to her relief, she was assigned a visa officer who could speak Hindi. Here is the transcript of her interview.

Mother: Good afternoon officer! How are you?

VO: I am good, thank you. So what is the purpose of your visit and for how long?

Mother: I want to visit the US for about a month to see my son, daughter-in-law, and my lovely grandchildren. We don’t get to spend time together very often, and it will also be summer vacation time for my grandkids. I am very fond of them.

VO: So you will enjoy spending time there and will want to extend your stay. What is the guarantee that you will return?

Mother: Of course, I will return because I have lots of work here. I am into full-time agriculture, and I have rental properties to look after. I have my family here, and I also receive my pension every month from the central government. It will not be possible for me to stretch my stay there.

VO: Do you have family or friends living in the United States?

Mother: No, I do not have any family or friends living in the United States.

VO: Have you ever traveled to the United States before? If yes, when and for what purpose?

Mother: No, this will be my first time traveling to the United States.

VO: Which cities will you be visiting?

Mother: I’ll be traveling to <xyz>.

VO: Besides <xyz>, which is where your son lives, where else do you plan to visit in the US?

Mother: I will be visiting Boston, Washington DC, and New York City. I want to go to the library and museum there.

VO: (with a puzzled look on his face) Library?

Mother: Yes, my husband was an expert in Indo-US relations. He has authored several books, and his books are there in the library of Harvard University and also in the US Congress library.

VO: How do you know that?

Mother: I have seen it online in the library’s catalogue, but nothing can be more satisfying than seeing it with my own eyes.

VO: Your visa is approved, ma’am. You will receive your passport in 10 days.

(My mother was still speaking!)

VO: (interrupting my mother) Ma’am, I’m convinced. Your visa is approved. Have a pleasant trip!

Documents asked: None
Documents she carried:
Even though my mother had no documents requested of her, she had made sure to bring all the necessary documents. She carried her bank statements, fixed deposit receipts, pension proof, and property documents, along with all the documents that I had sent from the US, including my bank balance letters, mine and my spouse’s passport and visa copies, invitation letter, cover letter to consulate, pay stubs, W2, latest H1B approval, etc.

Hi everyone,

My B1/B2 visa was approved at the Mumbai consulate.

VAC/OFC
Reached at 3.45. They informed me that my DS160 has a correction. So went to a local cyber cafe as the one besides the OFC center is expensive & charges 3.5k for a correction of DS160. Local Cafe charged me 1k and quickly came back and submitted & did the biometric.

Tip: if your appointment is after 4 visit at least 30-40mins before so in case of any last-minute changes it can be done and can be submitted on the same day.

CA:
Appointment time: 9.30

Documents carried:
1. All passport
2. DS160 confirmation page stamped at OFC Center
3. Appointment confirmation
4. Last 3 yrs ITR acknowledgement
5. Last 6 months bank statement
6. Letter for leave approval
7. Original PAN & Aadhaar

I had reached the Consulate at 9.10. I was let in the Consulate at 10 even though the appointment was at 9.30. There is no place/shade to sit around the consulate. So, reach only before 15-20mins. During the whole process, you will go through 5 checkpoints.
1st is before entering the consulate, there they checked the latest passport. You can carry only documents. No electronic devices, including mobile phones. My husband had accompanied me. So I left my belongings with him.
2nd is the security check-in. If you have a phone or any electronics, they won’t let you in.
Then you have to sit in the waiting area in the queue. The waiting area has shade, seats, and fans. The staff will inform when to go inside the building.
Once you go inside, you have the following process:
3rd checking point is the document checking. At this counter, only the passport was checked.
4th is the biometric verification, here your biometrics will be verified.
5th is the last & the most important one. The interview counter.

Q&A:
1. Purpose of visit
A. Tourism & visiting relative
2. What’s the relationship
A. Brother in Law
3. Is he your spouse’s brother or some other relation?
A. Spouse’s brother
4. Is your sponsor traveling with you?
A. This is a self-sponsored trip
5. Your application mentions your spouse will be accompanied.
A. Yes. He will be accompanying but it is self-sponsored trip.
6. Does he have a visa?
A. Yes
7. Has he been to the USA before?
A. No
8. How long will be your stay?
A. 30 days

No documents were asked except for Passport at any checkpoints.

Congratulations your Visa has been Approved
Have a great day ahead.

And finally, I was out at 2 PM.

Tips.
1. There’s long waiting time & very limited seating available inside the building where the last 3 checkpoints are there. Be prepared to stand for a couple of hours.
2. Be confident while answering questions & have eye contact.
3. If you have opted for a translator especially Telugu, there’s a longer waiting line. If you are comfortable with English opt for that. It will cut down some waiting periods.
4. It took 4hrs for me to complete the whole process. Plan your day and book your flights accordingly if you are flying to Mumbai for this. A few people missed their flights because of the waiting time.

I hope this will help you all to prepare for the visa. Thank you for sharing your experiences it helped me prepare for mine.

VISA experience: Applied for B1 to attend an academic conference.

Biometrics at Delhi (March2) . Very simple process as mentioned by all. Reach 30mins before your appointment time. They’ll ask you to enter the queue. Need three docs only (keep them handy): DS 160 Confirmation page, Appointment confirmation and Passport. They’ll verify and send you in. Important: Mask and no electronics except mobile phones. Small bag/backpacks allowed.
They’ll verify your docs, and get you in the queue. Will take your photo fingerprints and you’re done.
They’ll stamp your DS-160 and verify the details during the photo. You can get any changes required done right then.

Interview: MUMBAI (March 16)

Long queue. However, I was lucky. Took me a total of 50 minutes.
Appointment time: 12.00. They called the 12pm appointment people to form a queue at 11-11.05.
Check passport outside. Then next queue is to submit any electronics in the locker (Charges: 50/- per item)
Then, they let you in.

Step1. Security check.
Step2. You’re headed to the interview hall.
Inside there are three steps.

Step2A. First line, you show your passport, and you’re asked the language of interview preferred. (English, Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu were available)

Step 2B. The next counter is fingerprint verification.

Step2C. You’re headed to the queue of the language preferred. And then headed to the counter as and when it gets vacant.

Questions asked:
1. Why are you going to the US?
2. What research do you do?
3. What is the conference about?

Your Visa is approved. You’ll get your passport delivered in a few days.

No documents asked.

I carried an invitation letter, conference program schedule, NOC, Bonafide, Bank statements (last 6 months), ITR(last three years) along with DS-160, Appointment conf, and passport.

Visa approval update:

Applicants: My wife and 3.5-year-old kid
Visa type: Tourist
Myself working with an MNC bank based in India already had a B1/B2 Visa since 2014 and now wanted to apply for my family’s visa for tourist purpose only.

VAC on the 13th and Interview on the 15th.

If your kid is below 14 years then you need to just carry his photos and kid is not required either for biometrics or an interview.

Questions asked during the interview:
1. Purpose of travel
2. Have you traveled international before (she had to Canada, Swiss and UK as tourist)
2. Does your husband have a Visa and when did he travel last to US?
3. Will you travel alone or with family?
4. Where do you want to travel in the US?
5. Asked for Visa copy of myself

Documents required:
Only Visa copy of myself and passports.

Documents carried:
Marriage certificate
Bank statement for funds (online statement)
Child’s birth certificate

There is no need to carry unnecessary documentation – property papers and all that type of stuff as Consulars are very busy and they don’t have the time to verify such papers during interview.

And I am saying this as I have applied for Visa thrice now and every time it has got approved.

Best of luck to everyone here.☺️

My Interview experience

I have seen many posts but didn’t get much clarity around experience at Chennai VAC and Mumbai CA Center. Here are the details for you

Chennai OFC Appointment
1. My experience was very bad as my appointment was at 4PM but they allowed us around 5.30. It was 1.5 hrs delayed. There was a huge queue outside.
2. There is a private locker inside the premises where you can keep bags. They charge 50rs only
3. If you don’t speak Tamil, then transport is very difficult so book Airport taxi or ask Hotel to book taxi for you
4. Total 3 queues to reach biometric desk
5. Only 3 things required – Passport, DS160, Appointment page. Nothing else required.
6. If you book direct autos they will charge like anything so book ola or uber and select payment method as CASH only else they will cancel your ride

Mumbai CA
1. My experience was better than Chennai ofc. My appointment was at 12.40PM but they allowed us inside 11.30AM itself. So, if possible, go an hour early. NO bags are allowed inside and outside there is a private locker 1km from center so rickshaw will take you dear in 100rs and Locker will be charged for 300rs per hour. It’s very costly so see if you can just go with your document folder.
My actual interview happened at 1.30PM
2. Mobile, Power Bank, Headphones, Charger, pen drive such items even if you take inside, they will ask to keep it in locker. Inside locker is only for Mobile and accessories. They charge 50rs per item
3. There is a separate queue for every language and it’s huge one outside center. Luckily, they have chairs and shade inside to seat. And based on center load they call specific language queue inside
4. Total 5 queues to reach interview desk
Queue 1 – Passport check
Queue 2 – Language queue
Queue 3 – Language verification
Queue 4 – Biometric cross check
Queue 5 – Actual interview

5. Interviewers are from other countries and based on lang preference they will be translators with them.
6. Interview questions were normal
Purpose of visit
Travel dates
Company and my role
Salary
Any other countries visited etc.
7. Only passport was asked by the interviewer
8. There is no food options around center
9. There is Indian oil petrol pump if you want to go for washroom outside or buy some quick snacks
10. NO VIDEO, NO PHOTO allowed outside of center

B1/B2 Experience for me and my husband.

Office – Delhi embassy

Reached at 11:30 for appointment of 12:20 pm. They allowed us to go inside after submitting our mobile.

Preliminary Screening process was smooth. (Staff is very cooperative, they helped me a lot at the time of fingerprints validation, as I am having a broken arm). tip- carry a mask as they won’t allow you inside without it. Also carry a water bottle.

Questions asked-

What is the purpose of your visit?
What will be the duration of your stay?
Who will sponsor your trip?
What is your current role in your company?
Have you travelled outside India?
What was the reason of your previous rejection in 2011?

Congratulations, your visa is approved. Have a nice trip!

We got our visa. This website was really helpful, so I am doing my bit by sharing all this for others.

All the best to all of you. 🙂
